There is no AI-specific examination manual yet, and you do not need one. The Federal Reserve and OCC's Supervisory Guidance on Model Risk Management (SR 11-7) already defines what a defensible quantitative system looks like, and examiners reach for it whenever a model — statistical or generative — influences a compliance outcome.

Two passages do most of the work. The first sets the governance posture:

Read that against an agentic AI system dispositioning alerts. "Parties unfamiliar with the model" is a precise description of the examiner who will sit in your conference room. What a complete decision record contains

AI audit trail compliance is ultimately a data-retention design problem. For every AI-touched alert or case, the record should capture:

Inputs: the alert, transaction set, and customer attributes as presented to the system. This establishes what the AI actually saw, not what the database says now.
Evidence snapshot: point-in-time copies of retrieved evidence — list versions, adverse media hits, on-chain attribution, KYC data. Upstream sources change; the decision must be judged against decision-time facts.
System version: model, prompt, policy, and configuration identifiers in effect at decision time. This ties each outcome to a validated system state.
Reasoning: the stated rationale connecting evidence to disposition, in reviewable language. This is the "explain why it was not suspicious" question.
Disposition and routing: the outcome, confidence or risk tier, and where the case went next. This demonstrates the control actually operated as designed.
Human touchpoints: who reviewed, what they changed, when they overrode. This proves accountability did not quietly transfer to software.

If any element lives only in a vendor's system you cannot export from, you do not control your own audit trail. Put export rights in the contract before the first pilot.

The pilot window is real — and conditional

In December 2018, FinCEN and the federal banking agencies issued a joint statement encouraging responsible innovation in BSA/AML compliance, and it remains the clearest signal that regulators want institutions experimenting with AI:

That sentence removed the biggest disincentive to piloting AI — the fear that finding new suspicious activity would indict your legacy program. But the safe harbor is procedural, not substantive. The same statement holds banks to effective BSA/AML programs throughout. A pilot with no documented scope, no success criteria, and no decision log is not a pilot; it is an undocumented control change, and it will be examined as one.

The reconstruction test

Here is the exercise we recommend before any exam, and almost nobody runs it: pull ten AI-assisted dispositions that are at least twelve months old and try to reproduce each decision using only the stored record. In our experience the failures are rarely about reasoning quality. They are about data drift — the customer's risk rating changed, the sanctions list version rolled, a vendor re-scored a wallet address — and the stored record kept a pointer to live data instead of a snapshot of decision-time data.

The trade-off is real: point-in-time evidence snapshots cost storage and versioning discipline, and engineering teams will push back. Pay it anyway.
